Die Künstlerin Viola Kiefner und der Musiker Gene Coleman haben mit »Wechselstube/Exchange office« speziell für den »Tresor - Raum für flüchtige Kunst« eine Performance kreiert, die an die einstige Nutzung der Räumlichkeiten und die sozialen Begleitumstände anknüpft. Die beiden fensterlosen Räume dienten ursprünglich der Lagerung von Geld (Tresorraum) sowie dessen Übergabe (Kassenraum). Die geringe Distanz bei der Lohnübergabe am Schalter, die jedoch durch die trennende Glasscheibe technisch und emotional erhöht wird, hat Viola Kiefner und Gene Coleman zum »Leitmotiv« der Gleichzeitigkeit von Nähe und Distanz inspiriert. Als räumlich-akustische Umsetzung wird daraus eine zwischen Konzert und Performance changierende Aktion.
Innerhalb eines Absperr-Systems aus Gurtpfosten, das nicht nur die beiden »Tresor«-Räume, sondern auch die sie umgebenden Flure einbezieht, bewegen sich eine Gruppe Musiker und das Publikum. Im Tresorraum selbst wird ein von Coleman vorproduziertes Soundmaterial in Echtzeit abgespielt und eröffnet den musikalischen Dialog mit den musizierenden Partnern, die immer wieder in den Raum hineinkommen und sich innerhalb der aufgestellten Gurtpfosten bewegen. Der direkte Kontakt im engen Tresor-Raum zwischen den Musikern untereinander, aber auch zwischen den Musikern und den Besuchern wird abgelöst von Momenten, in denen die Musiker sich in den Fluren verteilen und ihre Klänge verebben. Die Besucher reagieren auf die sich ihnen bietende Situation. Sie können den Musikern auf der gelenkten »Bahn« folgen oder an einer Stelle ihrer Wahl verweilen. Zudem schaffen sie mit ihren Laufgeräuschen einen begleitenden Klangteppich. Das Publikum ist mithin gleichermaßen Rezipient wie Teilnehmer und Bestandteil der Performance. »Wechselstube/Exchange office« ist ein offen, experimentell angelegtes künstlerisch-musikalisches Event.

The German artist Viola Kiefner and the American composer Gene Coleman have created the music-event “Wechselstube/Exchange Office” especially for “Tresor: Raum für flüchtige Kunst” (Space for Ephemeral Art), which ties in with the former use of the rooms and the corresponding social circumstances.
The two windowless rooms served originally for the stocking of money
(a Strong room, or „Safe“) as well as for currency transactions (cash office). The minimal distance of the people involved in transferring money at the counter were separated physically and emotionally by a glass panel. This has inspired the artists to work with the “leitmotif” of simultaneity in terms of nearness and distance of bodies and sounds.
As a spatial-acoustic transformation this event will oscillate between a concert and a performance. A main feature of the installation is a crowd control system consisting of belt barriers (that are placed in the “Tresor” rooms and in the surrounding corridors). A group of musicians and the audience will move around the space, guided by the barriers. In the strong room itself recorded sound material will be played and this invites a dialogue with the musicians, who are reacting to it. The close contact in the narrow rooms among the musicians and the audience will create a highly unique listening environment, one in which some sounds are heard up close while others are far away.
The audience can respond to the situation in different ways that they decide. They can follow the musicians on this guided “course/track” or stay in a position of their own choice. In addition, they create with their movements another layer of sound. The audience is therefore in the same time a “recipient” as well as a “participant” in the performance. “Wechselstube/Exchange Office” is an open, experimental music and art event that provides the chance for new perceptions of space, listening and the body.
