Installation/Videoinstallation

Donnerstag, 8. Oktober 2009, 20 Uhr

Laurent Faulon/Delphine Reist: Konkret
Installation/Video installation

Thursday 8 October 2009, 8 pm

Laurent Faulon and Delphine Reist realise and show their works in dreary abandoned factories, near shopping malls, on construction sites. Their works usually come into being on site, in any case, however, in a dialogue with the surrounding context. Although the artist duo, who live in Geneva, have long since travelled the world with their projects, they are certainly not unknown in Stuttgart: In 2003 Faulon used a studio grant from the Institut Français for his “German-French Friendship” project on the North Station premises.

To match the Tresor – Space for Ephemeral Art concept, Laurent Faulon and Delphine Reist are each showing a work here which will be decidedly ephemeral in character. Faulon’s refers explicitly to the former function of the space. Spotlights gleam appetisingly in the ice in his “freezer”. The heat they develop clashes with the surrounding cold. The constant melting and freezing process becomes, thanks to a contact microphone in the freezer, a carpet of sound, which also makes the fragility of the ice a memorable acoustic experience for visitors. The mundane household appliance for keeping food from spoiling thus becomes a metaphor for coming into being and perishing as the actual constant in our world caught up in clinging to (consumer) values.

Delphine Reist, on the other hand, takes the claustrophobic, windowless spatial situation at Tresor as the starting-point for a video installation: the viewer’s gaze is directed into an empty factory room in which – seemingly without rhyme or reason but making a terrific noise – the neon tubes fall one by one from the ceiling to burst on the floor. It is all the more disturbing that the room and the lighting fixtures seem to be leading lives of their own because the “cloud burst” lasts until both the pictured and the real room are completely dark. The pictures, which at first seem so innocuously aesthetic, “tip” to allow viewers to look into a disintegrating world that is inherent in the machine-controlled reality of our lives.

"Konkret", the Laurent Faulon and Delphine Reist project, is to continue at Labor 1 in Ludwigsburg, with Daniel Mijic participating, and at KV Gästezimmer e.V.:
