Normalerweise ist die körperliche Bewegung beim Abspielen und Bearbeiten digitaler Musik auf ein Minimum, nämlich das Drehen von Knöpfen und das Schieben von Reglern, beschränkt – und steht so meist in einem großen Gegensatz zur rhythmischen, tanzbaren Taktgebung der Musik.
Die Lösung? Pimp my Pump! Daniel Dihardja und Frank Arnold haben gewöhnliche Handluftpumpen modifiziert und so eine Möglichkeit entwickelt, den DJ von seinem monotonen Körperausdruck zu erlösen. Ein Piezo-Sensor am Ventil wandelt die Luft in ein elektronisches Signal um. Dieses Signal wird an eine Station weitergeleitet, an die insgesamt drei Pumpen angeschlossen sind. Die analogen Impulse der Luftpumpe werden dort durch einen Micro-Controller (Arduino) verarbeitet und über ein USB-Kabel an den Rechner weitergeleitet. Auf diesem Computer befindet sich eine eigens für die Installation entwickelte Software, welche die digitalen Impulse in MIDI-Signale konvertiert. Daraus lassen sich mit Hilfe eines Musikprogramms elektronisch Klänge erstellen.
Das Resultat: Die Zuhörer werden zu Zuschauern und können elektronische Musik körperlich erleben. Aktiv und passiv, denn wer möchte, kann nach dem Motto „Pump up the Jam“ selbst zur Pumpe greifen.
Die Performance und Installation „Pumpbeats“ erweitert den Horizont der digitalen Klänge und ihres Körperausdrucks. Der Gebrauchsgegenstand der Luftpumpe, welcher stark mit Körpereinsatz assoziiert wird, verbindet sich mit der „körperlosen“ Musik zu einer Einheit. Jeweils drei Interessierte können gleichzeitig gemeinsam mit drei Pumpen musizieren und so eine neue Form der elektronischen Musik erfahren, und zwar eine flüchtige, nicht wiederholbare, nur vor Ort erlebbare Klangwelt.

Normally only a minimum of movement is needed to play and process digital music, that is, all you have to do is turn your head and push some buttons – so this usually contrasts strongly with the rhythmic dance beat of the music.
The solution? Pimp my Pump! Daniel Dihardja and Frank Arnold have modified common hand-operated air pumps and thus developed a possibility for relieving DJs of the monotonous motions they otherwise have to go through all the time. A piezor sensor on the air-pump valve converts the air pumped in and out into an electronic signal. This signal is conducted to a station to which three pumps are attached. There the analogue impulses from the air pump are processed by a micro-controller (Arduino) and conducted on via a USB cable to a computer. Software specially developed for the installation is installed on that computer to convert the digital impulses in MIDI signals. Electronic sounds can be generated from them with the aid of a music software.
The result: Listeners become viewers and can experience electronic music physically. Actively and passively because anyone is welcome to reach for the pump along the lines of ‘Pump up the jam!’.
The Performance and Installation ‘Pumpbeats’ widens the horizons of digital sounds and the expression they allow the body. The air pump, a utilitarian object closely associated with physical exertion, is thus united with ‘unphysical’ music to form an aesthetic whole. Three adepts at a time can make music with three pumps to experience a new form of electronic music, a universe of sounds that are fleeting, cannot be repeated and can only be experienced site-specifically.
