‘Oppressive’ is perhaps the most apposite description of the impact made by Steffen Osvath’s photographs and projections on viewers at first sight. Instead of scenes of idyllic family life, what they see in these black-and-white photos is scratched-out heads, faces contorted into grimacing masks, rendered anonymous by being blacked out, and dissolving bodies. Steffen Osvath rescued most of the photos he took as his starting-point from death by fire at the recycling centre. They are anonymous snapshots, staged group portraits of unknowns, the stories of whose lives can no longer be reconstructed from the photo fragments. By processing the photos by analogue methods and above all digitally, Osvath continues the defamiliarization of what has been photographed to further alienate viewers. On the other hand, he charges the motifs emotionally and symbolically. Osvath excavates subliminal latent energies, intervenes, literally leaves traces and, as a result, is right in affirming: ‘I don’t see myself as a photographer, more like a photo-archaeologist or photo-geologist.’

Steffen Osvath has created two room-filling Environments specially for Tresor – Raum für flüchtige Kunst. Alternately Cabinets of Horrors, photo exhibitions and Light Installations, they have the potential for taking on the aura of the Tresor rooms, which are devoid of fenestration and have bare concrete walls. The photos and slides flare up like brief brainstorms from the darkness of oblivion, only to sink back into it again. These pictures are in chronological order to tell a story. However, visitors to the exhibition construct the stories individually for themselves. A group of walkers is transformed by being juxtaposed with a soldier into a group of refugees. Next to a blind woman, they turn into lemmings marching to nowhere.

The exhibition title, ‘Wohnhaus grimmer Schmertzen’ comes from the Andreas Gryphius poem Menschliches Elende von Andreas Gryphius (1616-1664), in which the poet declaims: ‘What after all are we men! A house of excruciating pain? A Baal of deceptive happiness, a fata morgana of the time. A place where all fear and loathsomeness are displayed.’ With his processed photos, Osvath exposes to view the transience of that ‘deceptive happiness’, that ‘fata morgana’. The poem ends with the verse ‘Thus are we dispelled like smoke by the winds.’ The ephemerality of human existence is visible and palpable at Tresor. The installation warns of the impermanence and, ultimately, insignificance of the individual. It is frightening yet it is also bracing and above all, emanates an almost Romantic poetry that is irresistible.
